Wednesday, August 19, 2026

Witherby Publishing Group is saddened to announce the passing of Martin A. Rhodes, who died recently.

Martin was a respected maritime lecturer, technical author and specialist in ship stability, with a career spanning more than three decades in maritime education, training and publishing. Following 13 years of sea service, he began his lecturing career at the Glasgow College of Nautical Studies in 1995 after completing a First Class Honours degree in Maritime Studies at Liverpool John Moores University.

In 2005, he became Assistant Professor at the University of Trinidad and Tobago, where he played a leading role in developing the university’s Maritime Campus and establishing a Merchant Navy Cadet training programme and STCW-compliant courses approved by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency. He later returned to Scotland as Superyacht Training Academy Manager at City of Glasgow College, continuing his work in maritime training and education.

Martin was a longstanding author with Witherbys, having worked as a technical author for over 25 years. His books ‘Ship Stability for Mates/Masters’ and ‘Ship Stability, Strength and Loading Principles’ have helped students and maritime professionals develop their understanding of the complex principles of ship stability. We are grateful for his contribution to maritime education and to the professional knowledge of generations of seafarers.

Our sincere condolences go to Martin’s family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.
